The LAVs of Task Force Shepherd had reached Phase Line Green, the preplanned limit of the division’s advance. General Myatt ceased all offensive operations at 0647hrs on February 28, 1991. The end of combat operations, however, did not terminate the presence of Marine LAVs operating within theater. The 2nd LAI Battalion provided detachments in support of Operation Provide Comfort; the detachments were assigned to the 24th and 26th Marine Expeditionary Units (MEUs) from April 1991 through January 1992.

Assigned to the 15th MEU (SOC), a detachment from Company B of the 1st LAI Battalion deployed to Afghanistan in December. The Marines conducted a variety of missions, operating through the rugged terrain near Kandahar. In January 2002, a platoon from Alpha Company also went to Afghanistan in support of the 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines BLT assigned to the 26th MEU. The Marines again operated within Kandahar Province and conducted numerous reconnaissance missions and mounted patrols, as well as established vehicle and human traffic control points.
