Operations: Situated in a remote subarctic region about 130 miles northeast of Goose Bay, Labrador, the fishing hamlet of Makkovik depended on supplies stored in its warehouse to sustain it through long six-month winters, when maritime supply routes were blocked by ice. In late January 1948, fire destroyed Makkovik’s warehouse and much of the village, consuming most of its food, clothing, and medical supplies, including precious penicillin stocks. The fire also destroyed the shortwave radios that provided Makkovik’s 136 inhabitants with communications to the outside world.
