In der Kernphysik wird zur Charakterisierung eines bestimmten Betazerfalls die maximale Zerfallsenergie (E(3 max, kinetische Energie des Neutrinos = 0), flir die biologische Wirkung und Dosisberechnung die mittlere Betaenergie (E etwa 1/3 E(3 max) angegeben.

Die radioaktive Umwandlung eines Nuklids mit Aussendung eines Alphateilchens (4He bestehend aus 2 p und 2 n) ist bevorzugt bei den schwersten Elementen des Periodensystems anzutreffen. Beim Alphazerfall wird die Ordnungszahl Z urn 2 und die Massenzahl A urn 4 Einheiten vermindert (Abb .. ll). Die Energien der Alphateilchen der natiirlichen Radionuklide liegen zwischen 4 und 8 MeV. Die Alphateilchen haben bisher nur strahlenbiologische und keine medizinische Anwendung gefunden.
