Random-orbit sanders don’t leave circular markings as disc sanders do, and can sand in any direction regardless of wood grain. • Finish sanders are available in a variety of sizes and shapes for different light sanding applications. • A power planer is used to trim doors to fit openings and flatten or straighten out materials. Power planers are faster to use than manual hand planes, but the results are more difficult to control. • A table saw is the best tool for ripping stock to width, and larger models can be fitted with a molding head for cutting profiles.

Solid-wood slab construction is a common type of drawer front because many drawers are too narrow for frame-and-panel construction. To build a frame-and-panel drawer front you should have a drawer box that is at least 7 inches tall. Solid wood is most often used for drawer faces because the edge grain is exposed around a drawer face. You can use plywood to make a drawer face, but you must attach solid or veneer edge banding if you want to cover the exposed plywood edges. Plywood is a good material choice for building the drawer boxes.

The slides must be installed perpendicular to the cabinet face, level to each other and the front edge of each slide must be the same distance from the front of the cabinet. The slides are mounted directly to the sides of frameless cabinets. Face frame cabinets require a spacer, cleat, or bracket to support the slide and keep it flush with the inside edge of the face frame (see Spacer Options, page 49). It’s easiest to mount the slides flush with the bottom of the drawer box. Place the box on a flat surface and attach the runners (photo 1, page 48).
