The largest relative energy excursions at LEP, of the order of 10−4 , are caused by tidal effects [73]. Aside from the increased sensitivitiy to temperature, the low momentum compaction also increases the likelihood of longitudinal single-bunch instabilities.

The only difference is that now the R matrices do not refer to different wires but to different settings of the quadrupole. Timing and pulse-amplitude jitter of the extraction kicker may affect the beam stability and hence impair the quality of the wire scans, since the latter are not single-shot measurements but require of 35 the order of 50 beam pulses during which the wire is moved across the beam. It took some effort to sufficiently stabilize the ATF extraction, but in spring 2000 an extremely small vertical emittance close to the design value was demonstrated with good scan quality.
