Since many species of fish are the last link in the food chain, it is not too surprising to discover that the success or failure of a given year class — or the fast or slow growth rate exhibited by a species from year to year in the same lake or in different lakes — cannot be explained in a simple fashion. Great progress has been made, but there is still much to be learned before we fully understand the dynamics of fish populations. It is clear, however, that for maximum production fish crops must be watched carefully.

The last example is probably the most realistic, but in pond fisheries or in hatcheries the other examples may apply. The farmer knows that grazing land can support only so many cattle or sheep, but in the feedlot (equivalent to the pond fishery or the hatchery) larger numbers can be supported per unit of area. In both the feedlot and the pond fishery, a larger area is required to supply the feeds than is represented by the production area itself. Finally, fish ponds usually are monocultures involving a single species or at most two or three species, a condition that is rarely the case in natural lakes.

The equipment necessary for fly fishing, bait casting, and spin casting includes rods, reels, lines, leaders, and lures. These items differ greatly for the various methods of fishing as well as for the types of fish sought, but a certain amount of interchangeability is possible. For example, many species other than trout can be caught with a fly rod. Great sport can be had using a fly rod for both largemouth and smallmouth bass, striped bass, rock bass, crappies, sunfish, walleyes, northern pike, and perch.
