My questions concern the relations between the two. 17 I take it that if it is possible that I should G unintentionally, then it is not beyond my powers to G: there can, of course, be more than one kind of reason why I should be unable to G intentionally, though it is possible for me to G unintentionally. This is explored in 'Moral incapacity', where I also take further the distinction, made below, between impossibilities that present themselves to the agent's deliberation as limitations, and those that emerge from the deliberation.
Or, rather, the external reasons theorist may want me to say this: one of the mysterious things about the denial of internalism lies precisely in the fact that it leaves it quite obscure when this form of words is thought to be appropriate. 5 There is something wrong in his deliberative economy, and it lies in the relation of its parts, but it does not follow that the action has the defect. A particular application of this general point lies in the theory of akrasia. Some very extreme cases are naturally classed with defects of deliberated action as a purely psychological phenomenon: they unqualifiedly display lack of control. But consider the only too well-known case of a man who wants to be loyal to one woman and resolves to stop seeing another.
