Gradually, however, the prosperity of the mining industry began to subside, and miners had to open their eyes to other ways of making a living. One such miner, Thomas Rodda, looking for a home for his family, purchased the tenancy to a farmhouse in the remote location of Scorrier and set about making clotted cream.
By the end of the nineteenth century, the company had become known as Scotland’s premier tailors for civilians, and in 1903, it first supplied clothing to royalty – King Edward VII, as it happened. By the time World War One began, Kinloch Anderson had also branched into military tailoring, creating officers’ uniforms for all the major Scottish regiments. In the 1930s, Kinloch Anderson took the then very daring step of introducing ready-to-wear men’s clothing to its line – something most reputable tailors would have been shy of doing.
The company’s current chairman Robin Barr is the fourth generation of the Barr family who have headed the soft drinks business and the Barr family continue to have a substantial shareholding in the company. By the early 1960s the combined company operations had seven branches in Scotland, and had already taken its first steps across the border in 1954 when it bought John Hollows of Bradford.
