Zu ihrer Ernüchterung konnten sie nicht einmal beweisen, daß es keine solche Zahlen gibt. Rätsel wie diese faszinierten die Pythagoreer. Zu begreifen, warum es keine leicht abundanten Zahlen gibt, hätte keinen praktischen Nutzen erbracht, doch die Lösung des Problems konnte vielleicht helfen, das Wesen der Zahl zu erhellen, und war deshalb der Mühe wert. Zweieinhalbtausend Jahre später sind die Mathematiker immer noch nicht in der Lage zu beweisen, daß keine leicht abundanten Zahlen existieren.
Heute betreibt man die Suche nach vollkommenen Zahlen mit Hilfe moderner Computer, und inzwischen hat man so unvorstellbar große Exemplare wie 2216090 × (2216091 -1) gefunden, eine Zahl mit über 130 000 Stellen, die Euklids Regel entspricht. Er traf jedenfalls auf alle Dreiecke zu, die sie überprüften, allerdings hatten sie keine Möglichkeit zu zeigen, daß er für alle rechtwinkligen Dreiecke im Universum gilt, die sie nicht nachmessen konnten. Pythagoras kann eben deshalb auf den Satz Anspruch erheben, weil er der erste war, der seine universelle Gültigkeit bewiesen hat. Doch wie nun zeigte Pythagoras, daß sein Satz für jedes rechtwinklige Dreieck wahr ist? Die unendliche Vielfalt der rechtwinkligen Dreiecke konnte er ja nicht überprüfen, und doch durfte er sich seines Satzes hundertprozentig sicher sein.
