My MA was written and taught by men. I do not recall feminism—or even women writers —being discussed at all. I may, of course, be mistaken in this recollection. I am sure that other MA students at the university were engaging with feminist theory. Somehow we simply did not connect. And I ask myself: how much might this have to do with class? From the perspective of class, the problem is clear. Without the language to formulate the right questions, I could not see that what was glaringly necessary for my work to progress was feminist theory.
