She followed her mother’s advice, although it wasn’t her first choice and she struggled during the first semesters in the program. She admits she wasn’t particularly motivated to learn English, and instead had been planning to work with young children in a public primary school. After almost dropping out in her second year, she did manage to complete her coursework and managed to pass the global English proficiency exam requirement. After finishing, she did private tutoring classes for a year, and then moved back to the Isthmus to work at the Language Center’s Extension Program for another year.

His father is a campesino peasant farmer, growing corn and raising animals on family land. However, the town has changed drastically in the last 20 years. Water shortages, environmental degradation, the encroachment of the city into outlying farmlands, and competition from commercial-scale farmers have continuously eroded the ability of Oaxacan families to maintain themselves on subsistence farming (Grimes, 1998; Murphy & Stepick, 1991). Although Carlos’ father still maintains a yunta (team) of oxen and several milpas (cornfields), he also works now as a security guard at the local water-bottling plant.
