I typically read the entire thing within a few minutes. They have a long and complex pre-history in earlier Japanese art. With the initial administrative, publishing, and distribution help of the independent comic book publisher Malibu, Image Comics owned no creative properties it published, but it facilitated artist studios publishing their own work. Thomas Rowlandson (1756–1827) was a caricaturist who became well known for his series of plates entitled The Schoolmaster’s Tour (1809). The comics that were cut and pasted into Richard Hamilton’s and Jasper Johns’s work and later painted into the work of Andy Warhol (1928–1987), € Roy Lichtenstein (1923–1997), Eduardo Paolozzi (1924–2005), Oyvind Fahlstr€ om (1928–1976), and Mel Ramos (b. 1935) was presented as an authorless, generic idea of mass culture. Like a book, they contained a deliberate sequence of works that the artist selected to form a narrative. Eisner had also seen the term used in 1974, in a letter from cartoonist Jack Katz describing his effort to produce The Last Kingdom, a serialized adventure comic that would take him over a decade to complete.

The holidays here were spent meticulously viewing the collection of Hayao Miyazaki movies my son received for Christmas via the chimney. When comics crashed during the 1990s, there was a greater emphasis on just finding work, but as we’ve recovered from that and comics as a whole have grown in stature outside the traditional marketplace, more and more creators have come around to that earlier mind-set [and are] looking at work for hire as the starting point and creator-owned work as the long-term goal.
